-20LKFS Pink Noise for speaker calibration
This pink noise file is mono and reads at -20 on digital meters when played back from individual speakers. Setting your system to the following levels will help you achieve proper levels for TV and Film when mixing sound.
1. In your DAW or video editing software, loop this pink noise and pan it all the way to the speaker you wish to calibrate.
2. For TV and theatrical levels, this pink noise should read -20 dBFS on your software's meters. If mixing for Online, boost the level of this pink noise by +6 dBFS so it reads -14 dBFS on your software's meters. NOTE: there is no "standard" for online levels, so this is just my personal "best practice" that I use.
3. Using an SPL meter, adjust that speaker's output level until the SPL meter reads:
79 dB SPL for small rooms and headphones
81 to 83 dB SPL for medium sized rooms
85 dB SPL for large theater-sized rooms
4. Pan the pink noise to the next speaker you wish to calibrate and repeat this process until each speaker individually plays back at the SPL you've chosen.
Now you have a reference of how loud something is on your meters vs. in your speakers.
